RACE INSTRUCTIONS:

PRE-RACE:

Race packet pickup will first be available on Friday, July 12 at First Gear (111 N. Mosley in Old Town, Wichita) from 10:30 am to 6:00 pm.  Packet pickup will continue at Lake Afton on Saturday, July 13 from Noon to 6:00 pm, and on race morning beginning at 5:30 am.  You must have your USAT card (if registered as a USAT member) and a photo ID available at check-in.  Any participants with an expired USAT card will be required to pay the $12 insurance fee.  Transition area will open at 5:30 am.  Body marking and timing chip pickup will be immediately past the check-in point.  If you picked up your packet prior to race morning, you must still get body marked and pick up your timing chip the morning of the race.

A pre-race meeting will be held at 6:45 am.  Transition area will close at 7:00 am.  Race start times are approximately: Olympic - 7:00 am, Duathlon - 7:15 am, Sprint - 7:20 am.  Swim waves will be separated by a minimum of 3 minutes.  Swim waves will contain approximately equal number of participants and will be a mass start.  Wave categories (gender and age group) will be e-mailed to participants and posted at the registration desks at packet pickup and the morning of the race.

Spectators and family members must stay out of the transition area at all times.  Bike racking is on a first-come, first-served basis.  There will be rack space available for all bikes, but no guarantee of location.  For the most efficiency, please rack bikes in an alternating pattern. Please be courteous of your fellow participants and try to minimize your transition area.  Racking in an alternating pattern should allow appproximately 30" of transition area per person (seats on the rack every 15").

Turn in timing chips upon crossing the finish line!  Athletes not returning timing chips will be charged a $25 fee.

SWIM (triathlon only):

Caps will be provided in the race packets and are required to be worn.  You must wear the cap provided.  Participants will be split into separate swim waves based on the distribution of gender and age of all registrants.  Waves will be approximately equal in size and will start a miminum of 4 minutes apart.  Safety is of the utmost importance!  Be courteous to your fellow swimmers.  Do not swim over the top of others.  If your feet are being touched by a participant behind you, try to move right.  If you are the one doing the touching and can not get past, try to move past on the left.  Upon exiting the water, a banner-lined, carpeted path from the swim area to the transition area is provided.  As a back-up to the chip timing system, all racers splits will also be manually keyed into the computer.  Please try to call out your race number as you cross the timing mat into the transition area.

Wetsuit use will be in accordance with USAT rules.  If the water temperature is 78 degrees F or below, which is not anticipated, wetsuits will be allowed.  Above 78 to 84 degree F, a wetsuit will be allowed, but the participant will not be eligible for awards.  Above 84 degree F, wetsuits are not allowed.

BIKE:

Helmets must be worn on the bike at ALL TMES!  Headphones are NOT ALLOWED!  Chin straps are to be secured before crossing the bike-mount line while leaving the transition area and remain secured until crossing the dismount line when returning into the transition area.  Do not mount your bicycle until you have crossed the mount line and dismount your bike prior to crossing the dismount line.  This will be the same line for the Mudwater.  The course is an out-and-back on gently rolling terrain.

Drafting is NOT ALLOWED!  The drafting zone is an imaginary box 6 feet wide and 23 feet long starting at the front wheel of the bike.  Competitors must stay to the right side of the road unless passing another cyclist.  You have 15 seconds to pass through the other riders box when passing.  If you can not pass in this amount of time, you must drop back out of the zone before attempting to pass again.  Penalties for drafting will be a time penatly in the transition area.  Do not cross the center yellow line of a roadway for any reason other than an emergency.

A SAG vehicle will be on the course in the event of a bike malfunction or inability to complete the race.  If you can remember, please call out your race number when crossing the mount and dismount line.

RUN:

Headphones are NOT ALLOWED!  The run course is a 1-loop out-and-back on the west side of Lake Afton.  Water stations will be available at the start of the run and at approximately 1, 1.3 and 1.5 miles, repeating on the second loop for the Olympic Distance.

WAIVER AND RELEASE OF LIABILITY, ASSUMPTION OF RISK AND INDEMNITY AGREEMENT IN CONSIDERATION of USA Triathlon ("USAT") allowing me to participate in any USAT sanctioned event (the "Event" or "Events") as either a member of USAT or through the issuance of a single event license or permit; I, for myself, and on behalf of my spouse, children, parents, guardians, heirs and next of kin, and any legal and personal representatives, executors, administrators, successors and assigns, hereby agree to and make the following contractual representations pursuant to this Waiver and Release of Liability, Assumption of Risk and Indemnity Agreement (the "Agreement");
1. I hereby represent that (i) I am in good health and in proper physical condition to participate in the Event; and (ii) I am not under the influence of alcohol or any illicit or prescription drugs which would in any way impair my ability to safely participate in the Event. I agree that it is my sole responsibility to determine whether I am sufficiently fit and healthy enough to participate in the Event.
2. I understand and acknowledge the physical and mental rigors associated with triathlon, duathlon, or other multi-sport events, and realize that running, bicycling, swimming and other portions of such Events are inherently dangerous and represent an extreme test of a persons physical and mental limits. I understand that these Risks may be caused in whole or in part by my own actions or inactions, the actions or inactions of others participating in the Event, or the acts, inaction or negligence of the Released Parties defined below, and I hereby expressly assume all such Risks and responsibility for any damages, liabilities, losses or expenses which I incur as a result of my participation in the Event.
3. I agree to be familiar with and abide by the Rules and Regulations established for the Event, including but not limited to the Competitive Rules adopted by USAT and the Guide to Prohibited Substances and Prohibited Methods of Doping adopted by the United States Anti-Doping Agency. I also accept sole responsibility for my own conduct and actions while participating in the Event, and the condition and adequacy of my equipment.
4. I hereby Release, Waive and Covenant Not to Sue, and further agree to Indemnify, Defend and Hold Harmless the following parties: USAT, the Event Organizers and Promoters, Race Directors, Sponsors, Advertisers, Host Cities, Local Organizing Committees, Venues and Property Owners upon which the Event takes place, Law Enforcement Agencies and other Public Entities providing support for the Event, and each of their respective parent, subsidiary and affiliated companies, officers, directors, partners, shareholders, members, agents, employees and volunteers (Individually and Collectively, the "Released Parties" or "Event Organizers"), with respect to any liability, claim(s), demand(s), cause(s) of action, damage(s), loss or expense (including court costs and reasonable attorneys fees) of any kind or nature ("Liability") which may arise out of, result from, or relate to my participation in the Event, including claims for Liability caused in whole or in part by the negligence of the Released Parties. WEATHER CANCELLATION
In case of inclement weather, the event may be delayed up to three hours from the original start time, or cancelled, depending on the severity of conditions.  Safety of the participants is the top priority of the Kansas River Valley Triathlon Club.  Due to the cost of staging an event of this magnitude, refunds can not be given.  Unfortunately a make-up date is not possible either.  Even if weather prevents the race, we'll make every effort to hold the planned post-race cook-out.
